How did it all start?

After years of trash-talking and constant speculation, boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will attempt to improve his record to 50-0 as he stands toe-to-toe with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor on August 26 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

While the idea of a crossover between boxing and mixed martial arts seemed like lunacy, Floyd Mayweather has always been a focal point of these conversations. Comparing Floyd Mayweather with the current list of mixed martial artists was always intended with respect, as Mayweather is the pound-for-pound greatest boxer of the modern era and the undisputed king of pay-per-view.

When Ronda Rousey was destroying everyone in her path, people started to compare the athletes at the top of these two respective sports. Would Floyd Mayweather have competed against Ronda Rousey in a mixed martial arts contest? Of course not. But, what if a mixed martial artist crossed over to boxing to compete with him?

Enter Conor McGregor. A man who has achieved more in three years than anyone else in the twenty-year history of the UFC. McGregor was calling Floyd’s name out way back in 2015, claiming that ‘he would kill Mayweather in less than thirty seconds.’ At the time, it seemed unlikely that the two would ever meet – Conor McGregor wasn’t even a champion in his own sport. Just two years later, and McGregor has defeated the greatest Featherweight champion in MMA history in just 13 seconds and made history when he became the first-ever simultaneous two-division champion in the UFC.

What seemed unrealistic started to become a real possibility as McGregor stamped himself as the UFC’s own pay-per-view king. A contest between McGregor and Mayweather, two major pay-per-view attractions was simply too difficult to resist.

Mayweather vs McGregor tickets and venue

Representatives from both the Mayweather and McGregor parties have noted that the deal came together with such speed that they haven’t devised many of the finer details; including ticket pricing and pay-per-view pricing at the moment.

The fight is scheduled to take place at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas and will be distributed worldwide via Showtime pay-per-view.

A reasonable estimation of ticket pricing for the event would be referencing the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao figures. On release, tickets for the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao clash in May 2015 ranged between $1,500 and $7,500.

Similarly, the pay-per-view price will likely resemble the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao range between $89.95 and $95.95 USD. In terms of pay-per-view buys, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao topped 2.48 million buys and it is expected that ‘The Money Fight’ challenges this number.

MAYWEATHER

Profile

You can argue that no man shines under the bright lights of boxing like Floyd Mayweather does. Floyd is a defensive mastermind who has barely been troubled on the way to his outstanding 49-0 professional record.

Floyd Mayweather was born into boxing. Son of Floyd Mayweather Sr., Floyd was training for boxing as early as he could walk. He racked up a tremendous 84-6 amateur record and acquired the name “Pretty Boy”, suggesting that his opponents would never leave a mark on him. Mayweather went on to win the national Golden Gloves three times and claimed bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games after a controversial decision potentially robbed him of furthering his prize. After turning professional, it took just two years for Mayweather to win a world boxing title and he won the WBC Super Featherweight Championship in 1998.

Floyd Mayweather’s resume will likely go down as one of the greatest of all time. He has scored wins over some of the best boxers to have ever competed in the last fifteen years. He defeated Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez and in fact; all of Mayweather’s last 16 opponents were either current or former boxing world champions.

No one has had an answer for Floyd Mayweather’s defensive style. Floyd hides behind ‘The Philly Shell’, in which he uses his lead shoulder to block punches while and actively reacting to all of his opponents movements. Ricky Hatton, a previous opponent of Mayweather, believes that if Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Hatton himself weren’t able to land any significant punches on Mayweather, what chance will Conor McGregor have?

Floyd Mayweather chose to retire with a 49-0 record after defeating Andre Berto in September 2015. He was satisfied with his accomplishments and a record that tied the great Rocky Marciano in the history books. But now, he will return to the ring on August 26 in an attempt to reach 50-0.

CONOR

McGREGOR

Profile

‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor has achieved more in three years than anyone else in the twenty-year history of the UFC.

Conor McGregor’s career reached full-steam when he earned his shot at Jose Aldo, a long-time Featherweight champion of the UFC. Many thought that Aldo would prove too much for Conor McGregor, for Aldo had been undefeated for a decade. Jose Aldo, a typically conservative fighter, immediately rushed at McGregor with a combination and unsuspectingly found himself lying on the canvas after just 13 seconds. Not only had McGregor scored the fastest title victory in the history of the UFC but he had also defeated the greatest featherweight in the history of the sport.

If Conor McGregor already believed he was the greatest mixed martial artist ever, imagine how he was feeling after defeating Jose Aldo. McGregor’s aspirations were now above-and-beyond what any athlete had ever achieved in the sport. He wanted to become the first-ever simultaneous two-time division champion in the UFC.

When UFC Lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos withdrew from a scheduled bout with McGregor just two weeks before UFC 196, McGregor stayed true to his word of fighting anyone, anywhere by welcoming short-notice opponent Nate Diaz to the Octagon. Conor fought Nate Diaz at 170lbs, an entire two divisions and 25lbs higher than the featherweight division in which he was just crowned champion. Diaz stunned the world and submitted the Irishman in the second round. McGregor called for a rematch just five months later and avenged his earlier loss by winning a five-round majority decision at UFC 202.

Conor McGregor had cleared the roadblock that was Nate Diaz. Next on Conor’s hit list was Eddie Alvarez, the newly crowned lightweight champion. McGregor made history as he schooled Alvarez in a boxing clinic and became the first-ever simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history.

Regardless of whether you’re a fan of Conor McGregor, it’s difficult to doubt his word after what he has achieved in such a short period within the UFC.

Controversy around the fight

Unsurprisingly, ‘The Money Fight’ has proved to be controversial

From a boxing perspective, Oscar De La Hoya is furious because ‘The Money Fight’ seems to have intentionally been scheduled just weeks before the super-fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. Golovkin vs. Alvarez is one of the most anticipated boxing matches in recent years, and the scheduling of Mayweather vs. McGregor may very well eat into the pay-per-view buys of the event.

Elsewhere, leading boxing journalists are completely dismissive of the fight. Dan Rafael of ESPN and many others believe that it’s a dishonour to the sport that Mayweather is reaching the 50-0 milestone against Conor McGregor, who is making his boxing debut. Some boxing journalists even have concern for McGregor’s safety. In December 2016, Dan Rafael reported that a commission would have trouble to approve such a dangerous mismatch.

While Conor McGregor’s fans will gladly be supporting the Irishman come August 26, there are a significant number of MMA fans who would prefer to see Conor McGregor defend his UFC lightweight title. There are numerous top contenders waiting in line for a shot at McGregor and the lightweight championship, most notably Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov, but the division is now on hold for the spectacle that is Mayweather vs. McGregor.
